Chapter Twenty-Nine

Georgina had no idea what was happening. Her sister, Demetrius, and Cora knew Faruq and the others. But why they had drugged her, why they were meeting at Hag’s Rest in secret, much less, why they were now all discussing what to do with her?

It didn’t make sense.

Nor did anyone seem interested in providing answers. They talked around her, over her, about her. But not to her.

She listened, fighting the urge to vomit, the draw of sleep, and the sudden feeling of freezing that hit her every time the wind picked up. Now that her temper had cooled, so had her body. It was not a good night to be drenched.

She wanted to be home. In her own bed. Fast asleep and far away from these strange, angry people.

Yet, here she was. Here they were. She had to figure out what it was all about, and what they meant to do with her.

So she made herself listen, and tried to pick out some meaning from their words.

Faruq knew magic. That was clear. One didn’t burst into flames and walk away unscathed without magic.

Not only that, they’d mentioned inquisitors. Combined with the secretive meeting – the late hour, the secluded location – what did that tell her?

The obvious answer made no sense. Because the obvious answer was that Demetrius, Cora, and her own sister were mixed up in some kind of magic business. Something that put them on the wrong side of inquisitors. Helping them, maybe.

But that was preposterous.

Unthinkable.

Like Georgina herself, Olivia was the daughter of The Hawk, a woman who had devoted her free time and all her considerable talents to causing mind-bending suffering on elven mages. She was the daughter of Sir Arthur, whose own actions during the elven war had prompted him to spend his entire life in some sort of self-imposed penance. If she’d found her sister torturing a mage, she would have been less surprised. More horrified, certainly, but less surprised. Such cruelty, such a loathing for magic wielders, ran in their blood. It was their cursed legacy.

Meeting in secret, though? Helping mages?

No. That was unthinkable. That was something only traitors and spies did. Even Sir Arthur, who had killed his wife when he’d discovered her cruel secrets, had made the elven woman disappear – how and where, Georgina had no idea. He certainly hadn’t kept her about, harboring her.

And yet the longer she watched, the more she heard, the more she felt her astonishment rise. They were discussing ships and departure schedules. Ways out for magic-wielders, to avoid the king’s judgement and inquisitorial wrath.

And, what to do with someone who might imperil their operation.

Finally, she blurted out, “You’re helping them escape. Olivia, you – all of you – are helping them?”

The entire group fell silent at that, and they all turned to her, as if they’d suddenly remembered she was right there. Listening as they discussed her.

“You’re helping them,” she said again, her voice sounding quiet and annoyingly childlike to her own ears.

Olivia raised her chin and said, “Yes.
